New agreement connects education and employment across Melbourne’s fast-growing western corridor
Two of Victoria’s leading organisations have committed to a strategic long-term partnership to support the development of Australia’s future public transport workforce and research.
Transit Systems Victoria and Victoria University (VU) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create new opportunities for students while supporting workforce development across Melbourne's growing western corridor.
VU engineering, IT, logistics and supply chain students will be able to access direct pathways to placements at Transit Systems’ West Footscray and Melton depots. It also opens the door to applied research, co-funded PhD programs and workforce upskilling initiatives.
Transit Systems Victoria managing director George Konstantopoulos, a VU alumni, said the partnership laid the foundation for a combined approach to support students entering the industry.
“As a Victoria University graduate, I know how much the right industry exposure during your studies can shape the career that follows,” Mr Konstantopoulos said.
“By strengthening connections between industry and education, we can create valuable opportunities for students while helping build the skilled workforce needed to support public transport network across Melbourne’s Inner and outer Western growth corridor."
VU Deputy Vice-Chancellor External Relations and Partnerships, Wade Noonan welcomed the partnership saying it would pay dividends for staff, students and the western suburbs community.
“This innovative partnership will help deliver practical transport solutions for Melbourne’s growing west,” he said.
“By supporting TSV’s transition to zero-emission buses, developing workforce skills, collaborating on research and creating student pathways, we are combining VU’s expertise with TSV’s drive to modernise its operations. Our shared commitment to sustainability and strong connection to Melbourne’s west will help ensure a lasting impact.”
Transit Systems chief executive Michael McGee said the company was committed to Melbourne’s western network with more than 160 buses connecting communities from Footscray and Sunshine to Williamstown, Moonee Ponds and the rapidly expanding Melton corridor.
“We're proud to partner with VU in a collaboration that invests in people, innovation and the future of transport. It's an opportunity to transform how industry and education work together. We're creating meaningful opportunities for students and employees while strengthening the skills and capabilities that will drive our industry forward.” Mr McGee said.
The MoU, commits both organisations to a suite of development programs, giving Transit Systems' 300+ strong team access to learning and development opportunities ranging from mental health, AI literacy, disability awareness and post-graduate study.
In addition, initiatives including scholarships, transport focused programming at Brimbank Tech School (hosted at VU’s Sunshine Campus) and partnership with VU’s Skills and Jobs Centre will be considered as part of the agreement.
