As Australia’s largest integrated multi-modal transport operator, Transit Systems is leading the way in addressing skills shortages by creating pathways for international talent to contribute to the future of public transport.
Its latest initiative has welcomed four highly skilled mechanics from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and New Zealand to Sydney, where they are now embedded in frontline operations.
Transit Systems NSW Managing Director Rino Matarazzo said they are filling critical roles but also creating an environment where technical expertise is integrated with care and long-term purpose.
“At Transit Systems, we know the future of public transport relies on people with the skills, dedication and resilience to keep fleets moving safely and efficiently.
“By opening our doors to international talent, we are creating opportunities for mechanics to build a life in Australia, while strengthening our operations with new expertise and perspectives,” he said.
The arrival of mechanics Muhammed Ali, Shoaib Muhammed, Achinthaka Singappulige, and Buddhi Colonnen resulted from months of planning, coordination and support. Transit Systems ensured the new team members transitioned seamlessly, by providing support from visa processing and housing, to banking, cultural orientation and ongoing welfare support.
Achinthaka and Buddhi arrived in March 2025, while Muhammed and Shoaib joined them in July 2025 - marking two significant milestones in Transit Systems’ skilled migration journey.
For Muhammed Ali, the chance to work with advanced fleet technologies has been career-defining.
“Australia is a good country for living, with caring people and a professional, helpful team at Transit Systems. Here we work with advanced technologies in buses, especially EV, which makes me happy and motivates me to grow my career.” Muhammed said.
According to Shoaib Muhammed the move to Australia has created great opportunities and life balance.
“Australia is a beautiful place with kind, welcoming people. From day one, Transit Systems made us feel part of the team, giving us exposure to new systems and a more balanced lifestyle. My goal is to keep learning and grow with the company long term.” Shoaib said.
Achinthaka Singappulige described the move as life-changing.
“My first impression of Australia was how welcoming and multicultural it is. Transit Systems has given me the chance to grow my skills with modern equipment while enjoying a great work-life balance. Australia feels like home from the moment you arrive.” Achinthaka said.
For Buddhi Colonnen, the company’s support has been transformative. “Coming to Australia is the best decision I have made in my life. The lifestyle is more relaxed and I aspire to bring my family here. Transit Systems looked after us from the start, which makes me proud to be part of this company.” Buddhi said.
Mr Matarazzo added that each mechanic brings deep technical knowledge and international experience, from managing 400-strong fleets in Makkah, to mastering diagnostic systems across Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
“Their integration into Sydney operations has delivered immediate value, enhancing local workshop practices and sharing knowledge with colleagues,” he said.
Transit Systems EGM People, Safety & Communications, Tanya Smith said the initiative reflects Transit Systems’ commitment to innovative workforce solutions that build long-term resilience.
“This initiative is setting an industry blueprint for sustainable workforce planning - it is about strengthening the backbone of public transport.
“Skilled migration, when done with care, brings enormous value, not only to the business, but to our people, passengers and communities. These recruits are proof that when you invest in people, everyone benefits,” she said.
This initiative sits alongside Transit Systems’ broader investment in the future of transport, pairing technical innovation with workforce development to ensure its services remain reliable, sustainable and world leading.
By combining international expertise with local training and embracing future-focused technologies, Transit Systems is setting a benchmark in both service delivery and social impact. Skilled migration forms just one part of that vision that connects communities, creates careers and secures the next generation of public transport excellence.
