Transit Academy in South Australia celebrates first birthday with over 230 graduates and national award recognition
Torrens Transit, a Transit Systems company, is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its highly successful Transit Academy in South Australia, a program that is successfully attracting new trainees into secure, community-focused careers as professional bus drivers.
Since its launch in South Australia, the Transit Academy has marked a significant milestone, welcoming and graduating over 235 successful trainees, injecting vital new talent into Adelaide’s public transport network.
The Transit Academy has completely reimagined the traditional pathway into public transport careers by removing financial barriers and providing a supportive, structured learning environment.
The program offers six weeks of paid training, ensuring trainees experience no financial downtime while upskilling, a key factor in its widespread appeal and success.
The effectiveness of this approach has earned national acclaim, with the Transit Academy recently shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious Australian HR Institute (AHRI) Awards for Best Attraction, Recruitment & Retention Strategy. This recognition highlights how Transit Systems is strategically addressing skills shortages and fostering a diverse, professional workforce in the transport sector.
Torrens Transit Managing Director Andrew Jenkinson praised the program’s impact on both the company and the community.
“The Transit Academy has exceeded our expectations, not just by boosting our team numbers, but by fundamentally broadening the appeal of a driving career to a much wider audience.
“By offering paid training and a clear pathway, we are providing genuine job security from the outset, and an opportunity for people to take on a highly professional transport career.
“We are incredibly proud of the hundreds of individuals who have taken the wheel and become the friendly face of public transport across Adelaide,” he said.
The Transit Academy is continually seeking new applicants for its next cohort, fostering a professional driving career that offers high levels of social interaction and community involvement.
The roles appeal to those looking for a diverse and engaging working life, especially those with a car or HR license seeking a shift away from solitary or long-haul logistics.
Successful Transit Academy trainee, Daniel Mellier, highlighted the social element of the job:
“I think the thing I like most about my job is that no two days are the same! My shifts change from day to day and thus the scenery and people change, so seeing the infrastructure projects progress and meeting new people every day is quite enjoyable and then seeing the regular passengers that then become familiar faces who I can build rapport and have a bit of a chat or a joke with, which I think helps make the experience enjoyable for everyone.”
There are a range of positions available upon completion of the training, including casual, part-time, and full-time roles, suitable for all classes of drivers looking to step into a professional, rewarding career.
