Strengthening Community Connections: Horizons West Visits Swan View Clontarf Academy

This National Reconciliation Week, leaders from Horizons West—part of Transit Systems and Perth’s leading charter bus service provider—visited the Swan View Academy of the Clontarf Foundation to participate in one of the Academy’s regular morning training sessions.

The visit provided a unique opportunity to engage directly with students and gain firsthand insight into the Academy’s structured program. From the outset, the session demonstrated strong discipline, teamwork, and commitment, with participants showing focus and respect throughout.

While the training itself was energetic, it was the program's broader impact that resonated most.

James Turner, General Manager of Horizons West, said the experience offered a meaningful reminder of the importance of connection and consistency in building stronger communities.

“There’s something incredibly powerful about being on the ground and sharing an experience like this,” Turner said.

“Yes, the session took a bit out of us physically—but what stood out was the attitude of the young men. They showed genuine respect, focus, and a willingness to challenge themselves, and that speaks volumes about the environment Clontarf has created.”

The Clontarf Foundation plays a critical role in supporting young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men through a combination of sport, mentoring and education. Its programs are designed to improve school engagement while building confidence, resilience and pathways into further education, training and employment.

For Transit Systems and Horizons West, the visit aligned closely with the principles of National Reconciliation Week, particularly this year’s theme—All In.

Turner emphasised that meaningful reconciliation is built through active participation and long-term commitment.

“Reconciliation isn’t something that happens in isolation—it comes from showing up, building relationships, and being consistent in your actions over time,” he said.

“Experiences like this are important because they allow us to listen, to learn, and to better understand how we can contribute in a way that creates real opportunities.”

The visit marks an important step in strengthening Horizons West’s relationship with the Swan View Academy, with a shared intention to expand engagement across other Clontarf academies in the Perth metropolitan area.

As part of the broader Transit Systems network, Horizons West remains committed to supporting the communities it serves—not only through transport services but also through partnerships and initiatives that deliver positive, lasting outcomes.

Turner added that the morning left a strong impression on the team.

“We’re grateful to the Clontarf team for the warm welcome,” he said.

“There’s a real sense of purpose in what they do, and we’re looking forward to building on this connection in a meaningful way.”
