Safe Work is for Life: Leading by Example with Hemant

For nearly 13 years, Hemant Kumar has been a familiar and trusted presence behind the wheel at Transit Systems NSW. As a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) committee member, Hemant is known for his professionalism, punctuality, commitment to safety and willingness to support both his colleagues and the Operations team. With zero at-fault incidents throughout his career, he leads by example every day.

Putting people first

For Hemant, this year's National Safe Work Month theme, Safe Work is for Life, comes down to one simple principle: people.

"It is important that every worker return home safely to their families. It is a human value above all else."

This perspective highlights why safety is more than policies and procedures. At its heart, it's about ensuring everyone gets home to the people who matter most.

A safety mindset that extends beyond work

Working in a safety-focused environment has reinforced habits and behaviours that carry through to everyday life.

"It is also vital in our daily life as we have to abide by and live in a proper safety manner, either at home or at work, to avoid serious incidents, accidents and injuries."

For Hemant, safety isn't something that switches on and off with a work roster. It is an ongoing commitment that helps protect people wherever they are.

Speaking up and looking out for others

As a member of the HSR committee, Hemant regularly talks with fellow drivers about the importance of following safety procedures and raising potential risks.

"I chat with the drivers all the time about using proper PPE, following the speed limit in the yard and on the road, and reporting all safety concerns to the safety team or management."

These conversations play an important role in creating a culture where everyone takes ownership of safety and feels empowered to raise concerns before they become incidents.

Safety starts with daily habits

When asked about the safety habit he practises every day, Hemant points to one simple but effective behaviour.

"Hi-vis is the common daily ongoing practice being performed, and it is a habit for me and the team."

Consistently wearing the correct personal protective equipment is one of many small actions that help keep employees safe in depot environments.

Advice for the next generation

After almost 13 years in public transport and an exemplary safety record, Hemant’s advice to new drivers is straightforward.

"Do not speed. It is my personal and professional advice to all new entrants in the public transport industry."

It's a simple message, but one that reflects the responsibility professional drivers carry every time they get behind the wheel.

Safety is everyone's responsibility

Whether he's supporting drivers as an HSR committee member, encouraging PPE use, or leading by example, Hemant demonstrates what Safe Work is for Life means in practice.

His commitment to safety over nearly 13 years of service reminds us that creating safer workplaces starts with individual actions, everyday habits, and a shared responsibility to look after one another.
