On World Public Transport Day, we celebrate the people behind the network

On World Public Transport Day, it’s easy to focus on the big picture — networks, infrastructure, growth, sustainability and demand.

But behind every service, every stop and every safe arrival is something far more human than a vehicle or a schedule. A person. A conversation. A decision, at some point in time, to become a bus driver or work in the transport industry.

As Australia’s largest bus operator, we recognise the vital role buses - and the people behind the wheel - play in keeping communities connected every day.

When we asked our team why they chose the job, the answers are strikingly consistent and quietly powerful.

For many, it starts with something simple: a love of driving and the desire to help people, and to give back to the community.

There’s pride in that responsibility…in being part of someone’s daily rhythm. Getting a parent home to their kids. Getting a student school. Getting a worker to their shift. It’s not just transport. It’s trust.

For others, the role offers something deeper — a sense of contribution. “It’s rewarding… a chance to give back to the community.”

Public transport sits at the heart of how cities function, but for drivers, that impact is felt one interaction at a time. A greeting. A helping hand. A familiar face on a regular route. And it’s those moments that turn a job into something more meaningful.

There’s also a sense of discovery. One driver reflected on growing up in Adelaide but never really seeing it, until they got behind the wheel.

Suddenly, the city opens up. Streets, suburbs, stories, all experienced from a different vantage point. Not as a passenger, but as someone helping others navigate it.

Because at its core, the role is about connection. No two shifts are the same. Some drivers note that every day is different. No two passengers are the same. And that unpredictability is part of the appeal, a job that’s dynamic, social and grounded in real-world impact.

For some, that passion evolves even further, into a commitment to safety and care, not just for passengers, but for colleagues as well. It’s a reminder that public transport isn’t just a system or a career, it’s a community.

The Bigger Picture

As cities grow and change, so too does the role of public transport. Buses, in particular, remain one of the most immediate and adaptable ways to connect people to opportunity, without the need for decades of planning or billions in infrastructure. But their true value isn’t just in efficiency or flexibility.

It’s in people. In the professionals who choose, every day, to show up, not just to drive or transport, but to help, to connect, and to contribute.

So this World Public Transport Day, while we celebrate the networks that keep our cities moving, it’s worth pausing to recognise the people behind the wheel, behind the screens, and behind the scenes who make it all possible!

We thank all our incredible team members, and those who choose to catch public transport!
