Supporting Growth
Developing people is just as important as delivering exceptional transport services. Through Go West—our resources and tours division—this commitment is evident in a structured approach to training, qualifications and long-term career progression.
For the first time, new Go West bus drivers have the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification as part of their onboarding journey. The four-day training program equips drivers with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, including safety and legislative requirements, fatigue management and defensive driving techniques.
Delivered at training partner Blue Tongue’s facilities in Perth, the program also incorporates cutting-edge virtual reality technology. Drivers are assessed on how they conduct pre-start checks and respond to a range of real-world scenarios, helping to build confidence and capability in a safe, controlled environment. The program also identifies any knowledge gaps early, allowing for targeted training to ensure every driver is set up for success.
Building capability from the ground up
Go West Trainer Mike Mitchell said the industry-leading approach opens new pathways into the sector.
The program reduces reliance on recruiting experienced drivers by enabling people from a wide range of industries to be trained to a high standard and become proficient behind the wheel.
Creating clear pathways for progression
Beyond initial training, Go West continues to invest in the growth of its people. Drivers are encouraged to take on mentoring roles, supporting new team members and building leadership skills. This experience can open the door to progression into trainee supervisor positions.
From there, employees can continue to advance their careers. After gaining two years’ experience as a supervisor, they are eligible to enrol in the Schedule 26 Supervisor Course—a nationally recognised qualification that enables them to become statutory supervisors within the mining, construction and industrial sectors. This pathway also includes completing the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety exam.
Leading the industry
Go West Managing Director Brad Bunce said the program reflects a broader commitment to creating meaningful career opportunities.
“We want to set our people up for success while providing drivers with the highest level of training to our clients,” Brad said.
By combining nationally recognised qualifications, innovative training methods and structured career pathways, Go West is helping shape a stronger, more capable workforce—supporting Transit Systems’ ongoing focus on safety, quality and opportunity across the business.
