Go West introduces virtual reality training for bus drivers

Driving Innovation

Innovation is central to delivering safe, reliable and high-quality services. That commitment is being brought to life through Go West, our resources and tours division, which has embraced cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) technology to enhance driver training.

Go West has introduced immersive VR scenarios into its driver training program, giving new drivers the opportunity to practice and test their skills in a controlled, realistic environment before they get behind the wheel.

Using a VR headset, drivers are transported into a virtual depot where they complete a simulated pre-start check. As they move through the environment, they are presented with a series of questions and required to identify faults or issues of concern. The experience also places them in dynamic situations where they must respond to hazards as they unfold in real time—helping to sharpen awareness, decision-making and safety instincts.

Breaking the mould with VR training

Go West Training Partner Blue Tongue has developed their Better Than Reality Virtual Reality Training to break the mould, innovate, adapt and stay ahead. By testing drivers in a virtual world, skills are assessed in realistic work environments and any gaps quickly identified and addressed so they are ready to start work on site.

Blue Tongue worked closely with Go West’s training team to create the virtual environments, moving drivers beyond the traditional classroom and into real-life scenarios. This approach helps drivers retain knowledge more effectively and build confidence before stepping into operational environments.

Statistics show that VR learners are trained up to four times quicker than in the classroom, with job and safety skills improved more efficiently and effectively. The technology also enables a broader range of off-site assessments, reducing reliance on supervisors for training and minimising potential productivity impacts.

A comprehensive training program

The VR component forms part of an intensive four-day training program designed to prepare new drivers for the demands of the role. Alongside VR training, participants complete theory modules and on-site defensive driving exercises. Upon completion, drivers earn a nationally recognised unit of competency.

The program begins with an introduction to the training team and a driving assessment. Successful participants then spend three days at Blue Tongue’s Perth headquarters, where they are supported throughout the process by Go West Trainer Mike Mitchell and his assistants Gary Keenan and Lynette Hill.

Partnering for innovation

The VR training has been developed in partnership with Blue Tongue, whose in-house software team created highly realistic environments that reflect the scenarios drivers encounter on the job.

Blue Tongue General Manager Ben Warner said the technology is transforming the way organisations approach training.

“VR not only tests new employees’ skills, but it immediately identifies any skills gaps and extra training can be incorporated into the four-day training program,” Ben said.

“They can also be assessed in hazard and accident scenarios in a range of environments to test their reactions and thinking.

“It is a more efficient and comprehensive way of training people because they arrive on site with superior safety, job and technical knowledge. It also reduces the reliance on equipment and supervisors’ time in on-site training.”

Leading the industry

For Go West, integrating VR into its training approach reflects a broader commitment to innovation and continuous improvement.

Go West Managing Director Brad Bunce said the move represents a natural progression for the business.

“Go West is leading the industry with innovation across all sectors of the business and with VR now an integral part of our assessment program, we are the only bus company that provides comprehensive training, national certification and the latest innovations for our employees,” he said.

“This in turn ensures we become an employer of choice and deliver service excellence to our clients.”

By combining advanced technology with hands-on training, Go West continues to set new standards in driver development—supporting Transit Systems’ broader goal of delivering safe, efficient and forward-thinking transport solutions.
