Nicknamed “Sparky” by the Go West team, the 28-seater electric bus has quickly become a standout. Operating daily, Sparky transports Rio Tinto employees between Tom Price and the Mine Operations Centre, providing a reliable and forward-thinking commuting solution.

A smoother, quieter journey

Beyond its environmental benefits, Sparky is winning over passengers with its comfort and performance.

Bus driver Troy Illingworth has seen the response firsthand.

“The bus has some great features, is very comfortable and of course, reduces diesel use so eliminates carbon emissions and there are no engine oils and filters going to landfill,” Troy said.

The quiet operation and smooth ride are key advantages of electric vehicles, helping to improve the overall passenger experience while reducing the environmental footprint of daily operations.

For Go West, introducing electric vehicles into the mining and resources sector is a significant step forward—particularly in regional areas like the Pilbara, where innovation plays a critical role in supporting industry needs.

Tom Price Operations Manager Angelo Amara said the initiative highlights both capability and commitment.

“Go West is leading the industry with its roll out of electric buses to the mining industry and these vehicles will soon become the way of the future,” Angelo said.

“By having this bus highly visible in the Pilbara every day, it is showing Go West’s capabilities and experience with this technology.”
