Connecting a growing community

As Sydney’s south west continues to grow, so does the need for reliable, accessible public transport. For communities like Macarthur Heights, that need has been felt for more than a decade.

From 5 July, that changes.

The new Route 849 will reconnect Macarthur Heights to key destinations including Macarthur Station, Western Sydney University, Campbelltown TAFE, Campbelltown Hospital and Macarthur Square - restoring a vital link that hasn’t existed since 2013.

For Mel, a local bus driver who has lived in the area for over 20 years, this isn’t just a new route - it’s personal.

“I’ve seen this community grow from the ground up,” Mel says. “For a long time, people here have relied on cars or long, complicated trips just to get to work, study or appointments. I’m proud to be helping people get to their destination easier and hopefully making some new friends along the way.”

Mel is one of many drivers who understands that the job is about more than getting from A to B. It’s about connection to opportunity, to services, and to each other.

That impact has been highlighted on a national stage, with the ABC’s 7.30 recently featuring “The suburbs on the frontline of population growth,” showcasing the challenges facing fast-growing communities like those in south west Sydney, and the critical role transport plays in supporting them.

The introduction of Route 849 is just one part of a broader expansion. Nearby Menangle and Menangle Park will benefit from the 889 becoming a full seven-day service, while new routes will connect communities to the future Western Sydney Airport - opening even more opportunities for work, education and travel.

For Mel, it’s all about what these changes mean for people.

“It’s the small moments you notice - someone making it to class on time, getting to a hospital appointment without stress, or just being able to visit family more easily. That’s what sticks with you.”

As we continue to grow alongside the communities we serve, our focus remains the same: keeping people moving, connected and supported every day.
