This week at Leichhardt, our Transit Systems NSW trainers, P&C teams, and CX specialists came together for an impactful training session focused on inclusivity and accessibility in the workplace.
Hosted by Spinal Cord Injury Australia, the session was led by two inspiring presenters: Miranda Fenwick, Employer Engagement Manager, and Declan Lee, a power wheelchair user who shared invaluable lived experience. Their insights helped us better understand the challenges faced by people living with spinal cord injuries and how we can create a more inclusive environment.
The training was timed to coincide with the International Day of People with Disability, reinforcing our commitment to awareness and action.
Learnings:
- Hands-on Experience: Our driver trainers had the opportunity to use a manual wheelchair, gaining firsthand insight into the physical challenges and barriers that exist in everyday environments.
- Practical Awareness: Through this exercise, staff discovered the importance of small but meaningful considerations that can make a big difference for accessibility.
- Inclusive Language: An in-class activity encouraged reflection on how we communicate and the role inclusive language plays in fostering respect and belonging.
- Continuous Improvement: We explored practical ways to keep improving our approach to inclusivity—because creating an accessible workplace is an ongoing journey.
