Bringing the Katherine journey to life with Grand Touring

Customers travelling from The Ghan to their Katherine experiences can now sit back, relax and immerse themselves in the story of the Northern Territory, thanks to a new onboard audio commentary delivered by Grand Touring, Transit Systems’ premier transfer, charter, tours and rental specialist across Darwin and the Northern Territory.

This enhanced travel experience transforms the short journey into an engaging introduction to one of the Territory’s most iconic destinations, setting the tone for an unforgettable day ahead.

A Warm Cultural Welcome

The journey begins with a heartfelt welcome from Local Elder Jane Runyu Fordimail, inviting guests into one of the most culturally rich regions in Australia. Katherine is a unique meeting place where the traditional lands of the Jawoyn, Dagoman and Wardaman peoples come together—an intersection of deep history, culture and connection to Country.

Stories of Katherine, Told by a True Territorian

Passengers are then guided through the region’s fascinating past and present by well-known Territorian Amanda Jarrett, whose expert narration paints a vivid picture of Katherine’s identity.

From the origins of the town’s name to the development of the Adelaide to Darwin railway, the commentary traces the journey of the first Ghan passenger train arriving in 2004—marking a milestone in connecting Australia’s north and south.

Listeners are also taken back to the gold rush era, the establishment of RAAF Base Tindal—just 15 kilometres outside Katherine—and the town’s important role in Australia’s defence history. The story doesn’t shy away from the past either, acknowledging the 1942 World War II bombings, alongside reflections on the region’s agricultural roots, fishing lifestyle, diverse wildlife and the dramatic floods that have shaped the town over the past century.

A Preview of Natural Wonders

As the coach makes its way through the region, passengers are introduced to the breathtaking landscapes that await them. The audio commentary brings to life the natural beauty of Nitmiluk National Park, the awe-inspiring Katherine Gorge, and the ancient formations of the Cutta Cutta Caves—offering a compelling preview of the adventures ahead.

Elevating the Customer Experience

For Grand Touring General Manager Mark Davis, the initiative is all about adding value to the customer journey.

“It’s about a 20-minute journey from picking passengers up from The Ghan to where we drop them off to join tours exploring the national parks, the gorge, caves and rainforests,” Mark said.
“By the time they arrive, they already have a great overview of Katherine—a town built on mighty rivers, ancient culture and the true spirit of the Territory.”
