New bus industry gender benchmark achieved by Transit Systems

Transit Systems has announced the implementation of a Sexual & Gender-Based Harassment Prevention Plan (SHPP) across its operations nationally, demonstrating a strong and proactive stance on safety and respect.

Transit Systems Executive General Manager People, Safety & Communications said that while SHPPs are currently mandated only under Queensland’s updated Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws - the only state in Australia with such requirements - Transit Systems rolled out the plan group-wide, exceeding legislative obligations across the nation and setting a new industry benchmark.

“This isn’t just a compliance exercise - it’s about creating a consistent, safe, and respectful environment across our entire network, where everyone is welcome onboard,” said Smith.
“The transport industry is evolving with more diversity and inclusion achieved through our successful recruitment campaigns, and we are proud to introduce people to the bus industry, without discrimination.

“With a shift from a traditionally male-dominated depot scene, we wanted to review and elevate the standard of behaviour, and as Australia’s leading bus operator, we’re proud to deliver that to our workforce and the community.”

The development of the SHPP involved integrated consultation with employees and has now been deployed into national operations in alignment with Transit Systems Quality Assurance framework.

The plan outlines procedures, responsibilities, and proactive risk management strategies to prevent sexual harassment and gender-based misconduct in the workplace.

“As the transport industry evolves, we are proud to drive positive change that will set a new standard for safety, respect, and accountability across the sector,” said Smith.
