Transit Systems clocks up first hydrogen kilometres in South Australia

The odometer is active on South Australia’s first two hydrogen buses, and operator Torrens Transit marked the milestone with a special celebratory service from Morphettville depot to the city centre on Friday 25 August.

Torrens Transit General Manager Andrew Jenkinson was joined by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis, and said it was a proud moment to showcase the next generation of zero emission buses as they clocked up their first kilometres.

“South Australia has again positioned itself as a sustainability leader in the zero emission race, with two hydrogen fuel cell buses now in service with Adelaide Metro.

“We took the hydrogen buses into the city centre and to Hindmarsh Square, parking them at Pulteney Street for a viewing and of course, welcoming the Minister onboard.

“It was so great to have them out on the road,” he said.

The two Torrens Transit hydrogen buses now operate within the normal Adelaide Metro network timetable, so customers wanting to take a ride on a hydrogen fuel cell powered bus can keep an eye out for the signature green fleet operating on routes H20, 174, 172, H24 and G10 during the initial stages of going into service across Adelaide.

You can also spot the buses at Paradise Interchange, Flinders University, Flinders Medical Centre B and Marion Centre Interchange.

Michael McGee, CEO of Transit Systems which owns Torrens Transit, said it is a remarkable time in public transport.

“We commend the South Australian Government for their commitment alongside us to deliver a cleaner, greener commute,” he said.

“Transit Systems have once again set a new benchmark for what is possible in public transport, as we continue to work closely with our government partners, suppliers and stakeholders.

“We are proud to assist with decarbonising the city streets and we’re excited to deliver the next generation of transport in the zero emission landscape.

“We are relentless in our approach to leverage our global experience, to elevate local partnerships and bring world’s best practice into the Adelaide Metro network,” he said.
