Transit Systems partners with the Victorian Government to deliver nine all-new Zero Emission Buses

Partnering with the Victorian Government, Australia’s most experienced electric bus operator Transit Systems has delivered nine locally built electric buses as part of the $20 million Zero Emission Buses (ZEB) Trial.

Michael McGee, Transit Systems CEO said they expect over 670,000 customers will take a seat on a brand new electric bus over the next 12 months, which are the company’s first on the road as part of the Victorian Government’s ZEB Trial.

“We are proud to partner with the Victorian Government to bring our extensive global experience into the local network and deliver more sustainable transport solutions.

“This trial builds on our established operations in Victoria, as well as our electric bus and infrastructure capabilities, as we already operate Australia’s largest electric bus fleet and the country’s largest electrified depot.

“We are looking forward to delivering a quieter and cleaner journey to customers, and congratulate the Victorian Government on their zero emission momentum,” he said.

Transit Systems currently provides public bus route services to the City and Western Suburbs with services to East Melbourne, North Melbourne, Moonee Ponds, Footscray, Yarraville, Newport, Williamstown, Altona North, Sunshine, Deer Park, Caroline Springs and Melton.

John Storms, Transit Systems Victoria Managing Director said the nine new electric vehicles have been built locally by Volgren.

“We will be operating the new buses from Transit Systems’ West Footscray depot, as they will be deployed across the north-western suburbs of Melbourne including Footscray, Williamstown, Moonee Ponds and Sunshine.

“As part of the ZEB deployment, all 200 Transit Systems bus operators in Victoria will be extensively trained, with a combination of theory and on road preparation. There will also be further training dedicated to Transit Systems Operations and Workshop team members, so they are fully trained in the new technologies,” he said.

Mr McGee said added they looked forward to sharing the results from the trial.

“We estimate that 1.75 tonnes of tailpipe emissions will be saved per day directly from our nine buses in this green public transport trial and alongside the Victorian Government, we are excited to welcome customers onboard a quieter and cleaner public transport journey.” he said.
