World first technology designed and delivered by Transit Systems is propelling sustainable transport forward in Australia and the world, while protecting local waterways and marine life.
As the Premier of Queensland, the Honourable Anna Bligh, cracked the bottle of bubbles over the bow of the brand new Enviro Cat in the Port of Brisbane, it represented the culmination of years of planning, design, production and team work to deliver a world first environmentally friendly vessel.
The Enviro Cats were purposely designed by Transit Systems, in conjunction with the Australian Maritime College, the Queensland Government and One2Three Naval Architects, and then built in QLD with the aim to protect dugongs, turtles and local marine environment.
The Enviro Cats are an amazing feat of structural ingenuity; the ferries boast lower fuel use per passenger than a four-cylinder car, while they have a pollution free system with zero overboard-liquid discharges.
The hull of the ferry is designed to have minimal impact in the water – this means that it moves through at a shallow level producing less wash that can damage seagrass beds and the foreshore. As it is jet propelled, it has no propellers or other protrusions that could damage marine life.
The jet intakes that feed water through at the rear of the ferry are also guarded to prevent any intake of marine life and during night-time operation and low visibility, the skipper can use thermal imaging to alert him or her to any marine mammals.
The introduction of the Enviro Cats represents Transit Systems dedication to designing, building and delivering more sustainable transport solutions in Australia and to the world.
