Guide Dogs Sydney Kids Initiative

Transit Systems (NSW) Smithfield depot and the training department was proud to host 7 children and their carers as part of the Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Sydney Kids initiative to help build travelling skills for children and young adults aged 5 to 12.

With the assistance of the trainers, the visitors had an interesting, informative and fun day with us at the depot and on a trip through the surrounding suburbs.

The group was met at Parramatta layover where they received an introduction to the bus and driver from Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. It was then all aboard and off to Smithfield Depot.

After a brief chat about the day ahead, introductions and refreshments, it was off to do training involving boarding the bus, talking to the driver, seating in the bus, using the passenger signal in the bus, bus stop identification and disembarking at bus stops along the way.

A lunch break was taken at Stockland’s then some more practice on the return trip back to the depot for a drive through the bus wash and a chance to take some photos before they left with a bag full of goodies. It was an excellent day all round and the children were an inspiration to us all.
